Title:

Becoming whole: Empowering clients to pick up the pieces after religious harm and trauma

Presenter:

Ashley Hamm, LPC, CCATP

Description:

Religious beliefs and communities can provide powerful benefits to many who participate in them.  However, some religious beliefs and communities can leave individuals feeling isolated, self-doubting, self-critical, and lacking in autonomy.  Power differentials within some religious communities can perpetuate abusive relationships and actions.  There is a growing movement of therapists who are offering to help with the many ways religious harm and religious trauma can show up for our clients.  Whether a client wants to leave their religious community or stay, learning to build more clarity around their hurt and how they want to move forward can be incredibly healing and beneficial.

In this presentation, you will learn the following:

  • What religious trauma is and how to identify it in your clients
  • Both overt and subtle ways religious harm can be perpetuated
  • Using the power and control wheel to identify systemic factors that contribute to religious harm
  • Interventions that empower clients to accept themselves, navigate relationships, clarify their values, and honor their autonomy after religious harm.
